Trump (un)expectedly fails Taiwan

A few months ago after Donald Trump was unfortunately elected as the president, President Tsai Ing-wen directly called him and they had a short conversation on the phone. This was the first *direct* contact between the Taiwanese president and the American president or president-elect in almost 40 years. Afterwards, Trump via Twitter remarked that the “President of Taiwan” called him, which sounds like he was pretty much acknowledging that Taiwan is a sovereign nation. Of course, friends and family in Taiwan were elated at this and were hoping that, given all of his faults, Trump would support Taiwan against China in the “One-China Policy”. This was bolstered by the fact that through his campaign he repeatedly denounced China.

Since then, we’ve seen Trump flip-flop on literally every campaign promise he made, so it should be no surprise to us that he went full 180 and now is best friends with Xi Jinping and endorsed the One-China Policy. Of course, this left many Taiwanese unhappy.

Maybe the one positive spin from this is that we will see more caricatures mocking Trump in Taiwan. Source here.
